A lo largo de la historia de la cirugía de catarata la técnica quirúrgica ha ido evolucionando. Aun en muchas partes del mundo y en México, las cataratas aún se siguen extrayendo de forma manual a través de una incisión de 12 mm que requiere suturas que se retiran a los 3 meses de operado(a). Esta cirugía llamada extracapsular fue durante los años 80s y 90s la forma predominante de cirugía de catarata en el mundo.

Hoy en día, utilizamos la técnica CataLASE para la remoción de la catarata o cristalino. CataLASE consiste en realizar incisiones perfectas con láser con la arquitectura precisa para minimizar el trauma a los tejidos y sin necesidad de introducir bisturís metálicos, así disminuyendo el riesgo de infección intra-operatoria. Nuestro laser de femto-segundo después procede a realizar la apertura de 5 mm sobre la bolsa de cristalino donde está la catarata para proceder con la fragmentación de cristalino en múltiples pedacitos para ser aspirados a través de una sonda.

Throughout the history of cataract surgery, new techniques have developed radically changing the concept of cataract surgery and the timing of surgery.

Still in Mexico, there are many areas where cataract surgery is performed through a 12 mm wound in the eye with stitch removal after 3 months. This technique was called extracapsular surgery and was performed at routinely during the 1980s and 1990s in the world.

Today, Catalase utilizes a femtosecond laser to create corneal incisions with the perfect wound architecture with the correction angulation to ensure a self-sealing incision, less trauma to corneal tissue without the need for metallic blades and decreased risk of infection.  The femtosecond laser then proceeds to create a capsulorhexis opening (a 5 mm aperture to open the capsular bag where the cataract lies so that it can be removed). Then, the laser makes laser cuts in the cataract to fragment it into several pieces allowing it to be aspirated through a handpiece. Utilizing Catalase makes this procedure safer with less risk of capsular tearing and subsequent vitreous prolapse, retinal inflammation, among other possible complications. Visual results tend be better with more exact intraocular lens centration.
